“The Army Origin of the Royal Canadian Navy”: Canada’s Maritime Defences, 1855-1918

In 1954 army historian George Stanley claimed that naval initiatives from the eighteenth century to 1870s by French and British armies in Canada local land militia were true roots of Royal Canadian Navy. He privately admitted he was being intentionally provocative. The present article, however, reviews subsequent scholarship offers new research strengthens Stanley’s findings, shows continued promote organization forces after 1870s. army, moreover, lobbied for founding Navy 1910, supported service its troubled early years.
